Evaluations of the Four CALL Software

By Herri Mulyono

Principles of evaluating CALL software

In evaluating CALL software, principles of CALL evaluation proposed by Hartoyo (2008: 90-91) are used namely interactivity, usability (flexibility), content appropriateness, effectiveness and performance (or attractiveness). According to Hartoyo, interactivity is viewed on the side where the CALL program is able to provide interaction between students and the program. Usability refers to easiness and interest the program might offer to the students to conduct the distance learning via internet. In addition, the usability or flexibility of CALL program is seen on side where students could easily explore the learning materials in program while content appropriateness is to match what is being delivered in the program with students’ condition, like age and level of study. Performance according Hartoyo (2008: 91) refers to “presentation, layout of the screen, the color, and illustration used.”
