Narrative

Narrative: an Introduction

By Herri Mulyono

Narrative is a piece of text which is proposed to amuse, entertain and to relate with extravagant experiences delivered in many alternatives. While dealing with certain experiences, a narrative might be put similarly with what is called by recount which is closely about personal facts or other individual incidents or events.

In simple way, a narrative text is structured firstly by having orientation which introduces the readers about the setting of the story; either the place setting or time, or might be both of them. It is also to recognize who are the players or any one who takes account in the story. After the orientation is set, then story flows to an introductory stage that later move to the complication where certain conflicts are found between the players. The final stage of resolution is revealed as problem solving stage when the conflict is intensively down.

In addition, in some narrative texts, some author might also put the stage or re-orientation which tries to make evaluation toward the previous orientation. Also they place coda at the end of the story for the readers to make any evaluation of the incidents or every flows in the story.

Our curriculum (see standard competence of English by Diknas: 2003) has described widely that narrative could be also recognized by its lexio-grammatical structure such as : 1) it focuses on specific and usually individualized, participants, 2) it uses of Material Processes (and in this text,

Behavioral and Verbal Processes, 3) the use of Relational Processes and Mental Processes is devised to lead the story, 4) it uses of temporal conjunctions and temporal Circumstances, and finally 4) the narrative uses of past tense.

Here, below you could see some narratives found by my students:

  3. A pet fish

Once there was an indian who had a pet fish named tommy, which he kept in a barrel. But the fish got a pretty big and he indian had to change the water a good deal to kept him alive.he was too lazy to do that, and he thought he would teach the fish to live minutes a time, pretty often, and then he took him out longer, and after a time tommy could stay out a good while he was in the wet grass.

Then the indian found he could leave him in the wet grass all night, and pretty soon that fish could live in the shade whether the grass was wet or not . By that time he had got pretty tame, too and he used to follow the indian around a good ideal, and when the indian went out to dig worms for him to eat , tommy went along too and got some for himself .

The indian thought everything to the fish, and when tommy got so he didn’t need any water at all, but could go anywhere-down the dusty road and stay all day out in the hot sun-you never saw the indian without his fish.show people wanted to buy tommy, but the indian said he wouldn’t sell a fish like that for any money . You’d see him coming to town with tommy following along the road behind like a dog, only of course he traveled a good deal like a snake and almost as fact.

Well, it was pretty sad the way that indian lost his fish, and it was curious, too. He started for town one day without tommy coming along bihind, as usual . There was a bridge in the road when the indian came to it . He saw there was a hole in it, but he went on over it without thinking. A little later he looked round for tommy and tommy wasn’t there. He went back a way and called, but he couldn’t see anything of his pet . Then he came to the bridge and saw the hole , and he thought right away that maybe his fish had got in there .

So he went to the hole and looked down, and sure enough, there was tommy, floating in the water,bottom-side up. He’d fallen through the hole into the river and drawned.

Opinion : keep and care for something of value, before you regret next the day he does not have side again.

  7. SPUYTEN DUYVIL
    retold by
    S.E. Schlosser

Named after an area known as the “spinning devil”. The legend goes something like this:

Peter Stuyvesant, then Governor of New Amsterdam, got wind that the British Navy was going to invade the city. He dispatched Anthony Von Corlaer to ride up to the northern most point of Manhattan Island and blow his trumpet, (as means to summon the people). As he neared the shores, where the Hudson meets the Harlem River, Anthony couldn’t cross. When he called out to the ferry on the other side, no one answered. He decided then, to swim across the treacherous span of water. Halfway across, legend has it that the devil pulled Anthony under and while he was able to escape his grasp, he was too tired to continue swimming and drowned there… in spite of the devil. From then on, the little area in the Bronx, where Anthony would have come to shore is called Spuyten Duyvil.

Well, this bar is quite far from the original Spuyten Duyvil, but you can certainly get caught up in its rare beer selection (over over 100 types of beer, just don’t drown please). Although it is in Williamsburg the vibe feels more Park Slope. The outdoor terrace is one of the nicest and biggest in nyc.

opinion : work hard for it to be a legend

  32. Bloody Mary
Bloody Mary is a ghost or witch featured in western folklore. she is said to appear in a mirror when her name is called three times.

in folklore and children street culture, bloody Mary is a game in which a ghost of the same name is said to appear in a mirror when summoned. one of the more common ways participant attempt to make her appear is to stand before a mirror in the dark and repeat her name three times, though there are many variations. some include chanting a hundred times, chanting at midnight, spinning around, rubbing one eyes, running the water, or chanting her name thirteen timeswith a little candle.
in some versions of legend, the summoner must say, “Bloody Mary, I killed your son!” or “I killed your baby.” in these variants, Bloody Mary is often believed to be the spirit of a mother who murdered her children, or a young mother whose baby was stolen from her, which made her go mad in grief and she eventually committed suicide. in stories where Mary is supposed to have been wrongly accused of killing her children, the querent might say “I believe in Mary Worth.” this similar to another game involving the summoning of the Bell Witch in a mirror at midnight.

the game is often a test of courage, as it is said that if Bloody Mary is summoned, she would proceed to kill the summoner in an extremely violent way, such as ripping his or her face off, scratching his or her eyes out, driving the person insane or bringing the person into the mirror with her. some versions say that if you chant her name thirteen times at midnight into a mirror she will appear and you can talk to a deceased person until 12:00, when Bloody Mary and the dead person you asked to speak to will vanish. other variations say that the querent must not look directly at her, but at her image in the mirror, she will then reveal the querent future, particularly concerning marriage and children.

Bloody Mary Worth is typically described as child-murderer who lived in the local city where the legend has taken root years ago. there is often a specific local graveyard or tombstone that becomes attached to the legend.

After swimming around for some time they tried to get out.But the inside of the pail was too slippery and there was nothing on which they could rest so that they could jump out.One frog thought it was useless trying to swim on and just gave up hope and sunk and was drowned.
The other carried on swimming hoping against hope that something would turn up.He swam and he swam until he began to feel tired. But by this time the milk which was full of cream had become thick. When the froghad swum some more the cream had been stirred so much that it became a solid lump of butter.
On this frog could scramble and rest.
And from it he could easily jump out of the pail into safety.

    ‘Thank you kindly, wolf.’
‘Whither away so early, Little Red Riding Hood?’
    ‘To my grandmother’s.’
‘What have you got in your apron?’
    ‘Cake and wine’
‘Where does your grandmother live, Little Red Riding Hood?’
‘A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood; her house stands under the three large oak-trees’
The wolf thought to himself: ‘I must act craftily, so as to catch both.’ So he walked for a short time by the side of Little Red Riding Hood, and then he said: ‘See, Little Red Riding Hood, how pretty the flowers are about here – why do you not look round? ‘
Little Red Riding Hood raised her eyes, she ran from the path into the wood to look for flowers.
Meanwhile the wolf ran straight to the grandmother’s house and knocked at the door.
    ‘Who is there?’
‘Little Red Riding Hood,’ replied the wolf. ‘She is bringing cake and wine; open the door.’
‘Lift the latch, I am too weak, and can’t get up.’
The wolf lifted the latch, the door sprang open, and without saying a word he went straight to the grandmother’s bed, and devoured her. Then he put on her clothes, dressed himself in her cap, laid himself in bed and drew the curtains.
Little Red Riding Hood remembered her grandmother, and set out on the way to her.
She was surprised to find the door standing open, and She called out: ‘Good morning,’ but received no answer; so she went to the bed and drew back the curtains. There lay her grandmother and looking very strange.
‘Oh! grandmother,’ she said, ‘what big ears you have!’
‘To hear you better, my child,’ was the reply.
‘But, grandmother, what big eyes you have!’ she said.
‘To see you better, my child.’
‘But, grandmother, what large hands you have!’
    ‘To hug you better.’
‘Oh! but, grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you have!’
    ‘To eat you better.’
And scarcely had the wolf said this, than with one bound he was out of bed and swallowed up Red Riding Hood.
When the wolf laid down again in the bed, fell asleep and began to snore very loud.
The huntsman was just passing the house, and thought to himself: ‘How the old woman is snoring!’ So he went into the room, and he saw that the wolf was lying in it.
‘Do I find you here, you old sinner!’ said he. Then, he took a pair of scissors, and began to cut open the stomach of the sleeping wolf.
When he had made two snips, he saw the little red riding hood shining, and then he made two snips more. After that the aged grandmother came out alive also, but scarcely able to breathe. Red Riding Hood, however, quickly fetched great stones with which they filled the wolf’s belly, and when he awoke, he wanted to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed at once, and fell dead.

Opinion : In my opinion, this story is very good and interesting. It has good ending.
Little Red Riding Hood and her grandma finally can be saved and the wolf dead. The story makes me entertained and I felt like join in the story. The most favourite part is when the huntsman cut the wolf’s belly and try to save Little Red Riding Hood and her grandma. And when Little Red Riding Hood fulfills the wolf’s belly with stone. I like this story very much.

  98. The Rabbit and the Crocodiles

One fine morning Rabbit walked out of his home, stretched his
arms, and stared at the fields that lay before him. “Look at these dry,
brown blades of grass,” he complained.”I have eaten all the good
food here. A fine rabbit such as myself needs to have young juicy
blades of grass at mealtime. Today I shall set out in search of a
    fresher field.”

Rabbit did not have to travel far before he spotted thousands of
tender grass shoots. The field that lay before him was as green as
the brilliant scales of a relaxing chameleon. Rabbit stopped in his
tracks, elated with his discovery. There was only one problem and it
seemed to be insurmountable – a wide rushing river separated Rabbit
    from his field of dreams.

“I need to think about the solution to this problem. I’m a clever
fellow, and I should be able to find a way to bridge these troubling
waters.” Rabbit sat down to think about his dilemma. As he
pondered the question, he spied the scaly head of a crocodile
    bobbing in the river.

“That is it!” shouted Rabbit.’I will ask the
crocodile to carry me on his back across the wide river.”
Rabbit raced to the riverbank and just as he was about to make
the request of the crocodile, he stopped in his tracks. “Now, Rabbit,”
he scolded himself, “that is not a very wise thing to do.

That crocodile will likely stop halfway across the river and swallow me with one gulp.
I will need to be clever about this.”

Just then another crocodile swam into view. His tail moved his
scaly body silently through the water.”Ah ha,” nodded Rabbit.
    “There is the solution!”
Rabbit strode proudly to the water’s edge” Why hello,
    crocodiles,”
he said pleasantly.”Did you know I am able to count all
    the crocodiles in this river?”

The crocodiles looked at each other for a long time. Finally, the
larger of the two spoke, “That is not so, Rabbit. You cannot possibly
count all the crocodiles in the river.”
Now the Rabbit was very pleased with himself for he could tell
his plan was working. “Oh yes, I assure you that I am able to count all
of the crocodiles in the river.”

“If you are so sure of yourself, you braggart, then show us.
Prove to us you can count all the crocodiles.”

Now that was just what Rabbit wanted to hear. He tried not to
show his glee. So as to fool the crocodiles he said rather hesitantly,
“Well, I think I can do it. You must call all the crocodiles who are in
this river. Tell them to come to this spot and I will count them all”
The two crocodiles swam off, laughing to themselves about the boast
    of this silly Rabbit.

Soon crocodiles appeared from the east. Crocodiles came
from the west. The river was dotted with scaly bodies.”You must
make a line so I can count you,” shouted Rabbit to the crocodiles.
“You, Big Crocodile, come here and rest your nose on the riverbank.
Stretch your tail out into the river. The next Each crocodile must place his nose on the tail of
the crocodile before him until the last crocodile touches the bank on
the other side of the river.”

Rabbit watched as the crocodiles followed his orders. They
were mumbling and complaining amongst themselves about his
bragging. Rabbit smiled to himself when he overheard one crocodile
say, “That Rabbit thinks he is so intelligent. We will show him that
there are too many crocodiles for him to count.”

As soon as there was a line of crocodiles spanning the wide
river, Rabbit hopped on the first back.”One,” he shouted. “Two,
three, four…”Rabbit continued counting until he stepped on the back
of the last crocodile. “Thank you,” he whispered. He hopped onto
the delicious grass, took one bite, and shouted with his mouth full,”I’am happy that you helped me get across this river. Good-bye!”With
that Rabbit ran off into the sweet pastures leaving the crocodiles to
look at each other in confusion.

  105. There’s No Klingon Word for Hello

There’s something missing from J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the moribund Star Trek franchise, and that something is Klingon. I mean Klingon the language. If that sounds like a minor omission, consider this: The very first lines of the first Star Trek movie in 1979 were in Klingon: wIy cha’! HaSta! cha yIghuS! And those few words—which were subtitled as “Tactical … Visual … Tactical, stand by on torpedoes!”—have since blossomed into, if not a full-fledged language, one at least fledged enough to have a dictionary, a translation of Hamlet, and a small but dedicated community of (nonfictional) speakers, who’ll feel miffed by Abrams’ oversight.

Let’s just skip over the customary jokes about 40-year-old virgins who still live in their parents’ basements. Klingon speakers have heard them all. But the insults don’t bother them, because they know something you don’t. They know that Klingon is a sophisticated, extremely complex language that very few can master. I first came to Klingon as a linguist doing research for a book on artificial languages. My intention was to observe from a nice, distant, scientific perspective, but somehow I ended up with a little bronze pin indicating that I’d passed the first-level certification exam. The grammar offered an irresistible linguistic challenge. Klingon is difficult but not impossible, weird yet totally believable. Anyone can put on a pair of pointed ears or memorize some lines of dialogue, but learning to speak Klingon requires genuine hard work.

Most languages created for fictional worlds involve simple vocabulary substitutions, such as moodge for man in A Clockwork Orange, or meaningless streams of noise, like the high-pitched jabbering of the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi. Klingon is something altogether different. There is a logic behind it; a linguist doing field research among Klingon speakers would be able to work out the system and describe it as he would an exotic indigenous tongue. This is not surprising, considering that Klingon was created by Marc Okrand, a linguist whose dissertation was a grammar of a now-extinct Native American language.

But before marlin could reach him driver had taken Nemo aboard the boat.

Marlin swam to the surface and he cried, ‘ Oh ….. no! The boat,s gone and so is nemo. ‘ Marlin swam into a swarm of fish and he asked them about the boat.

    “ Hey, I’ve seen a boat, ‘ said Dory a blue fish
“ Where! Which way ! cried Marlin .
    Follow me, ‘ said Dory

Back in the boat, the driver took Nemo to shop for aquarium fish and a dentist bought Nemo to put in his aquarium. There, Nemo met new friends who all wanted to escape.
From there, Nemo escape, and managed to slide down a drainpipe and into the harbour.

In the meantime, Marlin followed Dory and finally reached all around the harbour but could not find out anything about his son, Nemo.

Just as he was giving up he saw fish very similar to him self swimming near the surface of the water. He called out , Nemo! Nemo ! . And the little fish swam down and saw his daddy . they were both so happy to be reunited .

    my opinion

in this story tells of a fish called nemo separated by their parents because of being caught by fishermen.

  122. greenhouse effect

when fosil fuels,or other fuelsuck as wood or peat, which contain carbon are burned, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
vehicles also give out,and so add, carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
the earth’s atmosphere allows most of the sun’s rays to pass trought it to heat the earth’s surface.
the earth’s reflect radiation cannot escape because gases such as carbon dioxide absorb it.
they grow warm and send head radiation back to earth.
this is a greenhouse effect.many scientists think that the greenhouse effect may change the climate, over the next 100 years or so.
one consequence of soalled “global warming” resulting from the greenhouse effect could be melting of the pollar ice-caps.
this in turn, could lead to a rise in sea level which could flood large areas of highly populated coastal land.
if carbon dioxida proves to be as harmful as thought.in order to reduce carbon dioxide levels we need to reduce the amounts of carbon-rich fuels burned.
